Talking Who ( 3/21/2012 )

Talking Who

With Doctor Who still going gangbusters some 50 years after it first arrived on the small screen, it's only fitting that Elisar Cabrera and Sean Harry have created an entertainment webseries in its honor. Talking Who talks about everything Who, from comics to TV, the original series and its spinoffs.

The Chris Gethard Show

Public access television has some real gems, but who's watching? Thank goodness for the internet that brings such jewels like The Chris Gethard Show to a wider audience. Since its advent as a theater production the internet has been vital to its success, and that interactive component is only heightened now. Watch it live, participate in the chat, touch base on Twitter, and enjoy the madness of this off the wall comedy talk show!

His Place

His Place occupies a unique space on the web as a Christian focused comedy talk show. I'm not convinced by the use of scripted comedy and characters, as they seem to dilute the real world nature of the TV show, but I do applaud the program for daring to be different.

History of Comics on Film

Derek Crabbe investigates various film and television adaptations of comic books in his educational series History of Comics on Film. Just like its name, this series is a bit dry, especially when episodes stretch to close to an hour. However the shorter episodes, like the 20-minute one based on The U.S. of Archie, are tight enough to remain entertaining.

Stateside Footy

In the land Down Under, they play their football with a rounded off ball in an oval shaped field, and they kick goals rather than scoring touchdowns. It's more than a bit foreign to American audiences, but Australia's fast-paced football alternative is gaining momentum in the US. This growing sport is showcased in the channel Stateside Footy, a program which features full length telecasts of Aussie Rules teams playing in the US and more.

Beached Az

A big blue beached whale is the unlikely hero of the off the wall Australian animated comedy Beached Az. The rapid fire episodes are great for those with short attention spans, with each clocking in at less than two minutes, but I find myself longing for a bit more depth.

Weir's Way

The late Scottish treasure Tom Weir showcases the country he loved in the travel series Weir's Way. It does look a bit dated now, and it’s easy to poke fun at Tom’s knitted tam and sweaters. However, Tom's passion and knowledge about Scotland shines through to make this essential viewing for travel nuts.

The Commish

Long before he was The Thing in Fantastic Four, Michael Chiklis was a good-natured New York police commissioner in the drama series The Commish. Its YouTube channel features full episodes from the first two seasons of this 90s hit. Hopefully episodes from the final three seasons are added to the rest soon!

Doctor Finlay

The medical drama Doctor Finlay remains one of the most charming series of the 1990s. It's been off television screens for a while, but STV has brought it to online viewers through YouTube. This channel features every complete episode of the period drama which insightfully dealt with the fallout from World War II and the shift to a National Health Service.

Mahabharat

YouTube brings us all 94 episodes of the Indian drama series Mahabharat. For modern viewing audiences the special effects may seem a bit crude and the costumes gaudy, but it's worth sticking with. I particularly like the fast pace, which sees this epic story told in less than 100 eps.
