Underground science fiction comic Space Ninja comes to life in the animated webseries of the same name. The comic's original creator Alex Mitchell works closely with the series producer Ed Glaser to ensure the program maintains his original creative vision. The animation is slick and the production equal to anything airing on television.

The geek world has a soft spot for New Zealand. The country gave us the Lord of the Rings trilogy and Xena: Warrior Princess after all. And now it’s brought us Frontier: Prelude to Darkness, an engaging animated science fiction adventure created by Lewis Roscoe. It might not be as professional as a Pixar endeavor, but it's entertaining with real heart.

An all star cast and some of the slickest animation around make The Chronicles of Humanity compulsive viewing for science fiction fans. The first season has just concluded, but already creator Damien Valentine is hard at work on the second. This channel gives folks at home a chance to catch up before the new batch hits the net.

Pioneer One is one of the most ambitious drama series I've seen on the web. Equal parts political thriller and science fiction, the complex series unfolds slowly, rewarding its viewers for their patience. With episodes clocking in at more than half an hour a piece they may seem like a slog for the YouTube generation, but their depth is impressive.

AIDAN 5 pushes the boundaries of the futuristic science fiction webseries with its gritty narrative, mix of hand-drawn art and live action footage, and shoestring budget. It's clearly a labor of love for the cast and crew of volunteers, and their passion shows. Every episode seems to end on a cliffhanger which has us hanging out for the next.

Virus Buster Serge wasn't on the anime scene for long, but in its one season it managed to polarize mecha fans. Some loved it, while others were frustrated with the many questions it left unanswered. Another year, another war. The Japanese animated series Robotech: The Masters picks up the story of the Robotech Chronicles following the end of the first Robotech War. The earth is a very different place following that alien conflict, devastated and decimated. But this kind of destruction is far from over.

The Robotech chronicles reach their stunning conclusion in Robotech: The New Generation. Here we see whether the earthlings manage to take back control of Earth from the Invid alien race. This series originally screened in the 80s, but like the very best anime it's lost none of its appeal over time.

Descendants of Darkness takes the detective genre to the world of anime. Unlike the typical detective series which neatly wraps up a case in an episode, this series takes a few eps to conclude a case. That in depth approach works well, so it’s a shame the series was axed after one season!

We're introduced to the Robotech Wars with the first season of the Japanese anime, known as The Macross Saga. Modern day audiences may scoff at the futuristic world of 1999 portrayed in this cartoon from the 80s, but if you can suspend your disbelief this mecha series is a lot of fun.
