I had high hopes for this week’s episode of Canadian Idol, where the contestants were invited to visit rock and roll heaven. All the tunes were performed by the music industry’s dearly departed, so I knew the music would be top notch.

After a few shaky performances Amberly Thiessen was back to her best with this stirring rendition of Bob Marley’s Redemption Song.

Amberly has such a stunning voice and a real gift for interpreting a lyric. When she simply sings with the backing of her acoustic guitar, she shines. She’s tried to mix it up in the last few weeks, but she’s definitely at her strongest when everything else is stripped away.

It was believable and beautiful, just the things she needs to cement a place in the top eight.
