Canadian Idol has a bit of a reputation for being more than a singing contest: they actually look for musicians. One of the brightest stars of the new season is Earl Stevenson, a very cool cat from Lloydminster, Alberta.

Here he does Dave Matthews doing Jimi Hendrix doing Bob Dylan, with an electrifying performance of All Along the Watchtower.

What I like most about Earl is that he’s just so authentic. He’s not the slick pretty boy who fell into music to meet chicks. But his awkwardness and genuine passion for his craft is so endearing.

One week in and he’s already producing performances like this. I can’t wait to see what’s next.
