The original premise of the show followed twins Brandon and Brenda Walsh as they adjusted to the culture shock of moving from Minnesota to Beverly Hills.

As the program developed it began to deal with topical issues affecting its teenage audience, including date rape, gay rights, drug abuse, suicide, teen pregnancy, and AIDS.
