Degrassi: The Next Generation is a Canadian teen drama series. It is a spinoff of the popular 1980s programs "The Kids of Degrassi Street," "Degrassi Junior High," and "Degrassi High."

Like it related series, Degrassi: The Next Generation centers on the lives of students attending Degrassi Community School. This diverse collection of characters face typical teen concerns such as peer pressure, poor self esteem, sexual identity, and relationships. It also addresses more controversial topics including child abuse, school shooting, teen pregnancy, and drug abuse.

One of the key characters is Emma Nelson, the child of single mom Christine, a character originally introduced on Degrassi Junior High. She provides the link between the original series and the current program. However, other characters from the Degrassi universe also make regular appearances, including Christine's friend Caitlin, and former student and now principal Joey Jeremiah.
