Guiding Light is the longest running soap opera on television, and the longest running drama in history. The stories of the families of Springfield have kept audiences around the world entertained for more than 70 years.

The drama series focuses on the lives of five close-knit families: the Bauers, the Spauldings, the Lewises, the Marlers, and the Coopers.

In the program's early days it focused on realistic storylines concerning universal issues. In the nineties and early noughties Guiding Light featured more outlandish plot twists in efforts to keep up with other popular soaps like Days of Our Lives. The program has recently been revamped again to feature less sensational storylines and a more realistic look.

Guiding Light debuted as a radio serial in 1937, before making the move to television in 1952.The title is a reference to a lamp kept in the study of Reverend Dr John Ruthledge, a major character in the series' early days. His family and other members of the community used this lamp to help them find assistance in times of trouble.
