The series is narrated by the central character Ted Mosby who tells his children about life before they were born. Each episode flashes back to early periods in Ted's life. Back then, Ted's best friend was Marshall. The pair were enjoying bachelorhood until Marshall announced he was marrying Lily.

This confession makes Ted realize he'd better take life a bit more seriously if he ever hopes to find "The One." Ted's womanizing friend Barney is his unlikely aide in his quest for true love.
