Criminal Intent is the third program in the Law & Order franchise. It follows detectives working for New York's Major Case Squad, the team responsible for investigating the city's most devastating crimes.

Criminal Intent's key characters are super-intelligent Detective Robert Goren, played by Vincent D'Onofrio, his practical partner Detective Alexandra Eames, played by Kathryn Erbe, and troubled Detective Mike Logan, played by Chris Noth. Like the other Law & Order programs, these detectives work with the District Attorneys in the pursuit of justice.

But Criminal Intent is not simply a carbon copy of the other Law & Order programs. It is unique in its presentation, which shows the crimes through the eyes of the perpetrators. Their actions and motives are carefully examined here, while the other Law & Order programs tend to focus on the legal proceedings.
