The Maxx is a monster living in the alleyways of New York City. Here he is a downtrodden, box-dwelling creature. But The Maxx also inhabits an alternate universe, known as The Outback. Here in his colorful world he is a hero.

Maxx's only friend is freelance social worker Julie. She believes Maxx's other world is simply an escape from the harsh realities of New York living. Yet she doesn't realize she too occupies a space in The Outback. Here she is known as the Jungle Queen, a powerful leader who Maxx protects.

The series features a distinctive animation style, which shifts from detailed sketches to simplified cartoons, CGI, and even live-action footage. The stylistic shifts were often employed to show a change in character perspective.

The Maxx was adapted from Sam Kieth's comic book series of the same name. The program was praised by fans for its faithful adaptation of the original comic.
